Juvie, the easy-clean chick brooder building plans
These plans are to build a ~2’ x 4’ chick brooder.
Plans include a complete materials list, cut lists and diagrams, and images and written instructions for each step.
Designed for ease of care and cleaning, the top frame can easily be lifted off, leaving the brooder box separate for easy cleaning. The box weighs in at just under 24 pounds, so it can be carried by one person to dump and clean out.
Access from the front reduces the preadator response (and accompying stress) that comes when prey animals are approached from above, not to mention, it saves your back and makes for some great chicken TV. The width of the brooder gives the chicks a greater heat gradient, so they can self regulate between temperature zones.
Top rails have hooks installed to hang water and feed; hanging these helps keep them free of debris. The brooder can hold up to a one-gallon waterer.
A shop lamp with a heat source can be placed directly on the top – no need to move anything to access the inside!
A split front door keeps one side closed (so chicks can't escape) while you fill food and water from the other.
The plans include options for hardware cloth or polycarbonate windows on the front doors.
Live in a colder climate or hatching in the winter months? Insulation packs are coming soon.
Dimensions:
4' x 2' x19" tall.
6.4 square feet of floor space.
Designed to house chicks hatched from a fully loaded standard incubator* for their first 4-6 weeks.
*Standard incubators hold 20-25 eggs.
At an 80% hatch rate, this results in 16-20 chicks from 20 -25 eggs.
